Description
Summary:Mental health has become an important issue in Indonesia, with an increasing prevalence of depression and its significant impact on individuals' productivity and well-being. However, the existing treatment for depression is considered suboptimal. Therefore, a patient-centered approach such as selfmanagement in the treatment of depression is needed. This research aims to provide an initial overview of patients' views on self-management as a supportive therapy for depression. The study, conducted from June to July 2023 on outpatient psychiatric patients at the West Java Provincial Mental Hospital, employed a cross-sectional method and was analyzed descriptively. The questionnaire instrument used was adapted from previous research and underwent validity and reliability testing. Analysis of 33 respondents indicated that the management of depression through active efforts and professional assistance (3.65) and active, structured, and planned self-care (3.63) were deemed highly important. Additionally, there was a significant difference between males and females in seeking information about others' prejudices toward patients and their depressive condition (p = 0.012) and in seeking professional help when taking medication (p = 0.009). Significant differences were also observed based on the consumption of benzodiazepines in suitable treatment (p = 0.009), waking up from sleep (p = 0.015), and morning showers (p = 0.031). However, the analysis results did not show a significant correlation between respondents' age and their perception of specific strategies (p > 0.05). This research provides an initial contribution to the development of patient-centered approaches in the treatment of depression in Indonesia.
