Description
Summary:Satellite altimetry technique has a great significance to be applied in various physical oceanography studies of Indonesia waters. In most cases, the ocean/sea tide signals should be removed from the altimetry data. The tide information is usually obtained from global tide models, however, these type of models are not fit to the regional tidal characteristics. Therefore, a regional tides model is required in order to improve quality of sea level data derives from satellite altimetry. This paper investigate the application of TOPEX/Poseidon altimetry data to determine tidal constituents at shallow water areas using harmonic analysis. The least-squares method is applied in estimating such constituents. The result of this study shows that satellite altimetry data can be used to determine the tidal constituents in Indonesia waters. However, there is still a problem in the estimated phase lag in all costituents, especially in shallow water areas. There is still large different phase value between the ascending and descending pass data. Due to this problem, the co-tidal chart based on the estimated constituents can not be derived. However, for tidal prediction purpose, those constituents can be applied.
