Summary: | Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a global health problem and is the fourth highest cause of death in the world. Management of this disease is quite complicated, because it needs patient's self-management which requiring behavioral changes that not easy such as quite smoking, proper use of inhalation medications and optimal adherence to the treatment. Role of the pharmacists counseling in improving treatment management of patients with COPD is still not much studied. This study aims to analyze how counseling by pharmacists influence on knowledge, adherence, inhalation technique, and also quality of life of outpatients with COPD in the Asthma/COPD outpatient ward of Persahabatan hospital. Methods: Subjects were divided into the ceunselling group and the control group based on week of their visit, A total of 63 subjects were obtained consisting of 32 subjects for the counseling group and 31 subjects for the control group. Counseling group received counseling from the pharmacist about drug problems 15 min), information about the proper use of inhaler medications by verbal and watch a video demonstration and give a brochure about COPD and its pharmacotherapy. Illustration of knowledge was assessed with 10 questions, adherence was assessed using Morisky 8 Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8) questionaire, inhalation technique assessed by 13 item check list and the quality of life assessed by SGRQ questionaire. Data taken during the pre-test and post-test were conducted on the subject visit next month and then analyzed using SPSS. The results showed that counseling can improve the knowledge of the subject { the average score of knowledge was increase significantly (p <0.05) in the counseling group (76.56 becomes 87.50) than the cootrol group (80.32 into 85.81 )}; improve adherence {(the average score MMASJ8 was increase significantly (p <0.05) in the counselling group (6.38 to 6.75) than the control group (6.42 becomes 6.68)) ; increase significantly (p <0.05) the average number of correct use of inhaler technique on the subject of counseling group (10.31 ± 2.46 to 12.5 ± 0.88) than the control group (10, 26 be 11.94 ± 1.93 1.63), but was unable to give improvement of quality of life {no significant difference (p> 0.05) in the SGRQ score}.
