Nowadays used oil can be recycled by several procceses, one of which is dewatering. That is separation proses of emulsified water in oil. The aim of this research is to get the optimal condition of reducing the water content in used oil by breaking the water emulsion in oil using NaCl solution in water-ethanol solvent as a demulsifier. The studied proccess parameter consist of the effect of electrolyte concentration, alcohol volume in electrolyte solution, and the ratio of electrolyte solution volume to used oil volume. The determination of water content was measured by using FTIR with HATR technique. The result shows the presence of water absorption peak at 3400 cm-1 which is the peak of O-H translational vibration. The optimal condition of water emulsion breaking in the used oil was obtained at 1200 ppm NaCl concentration in 50% water-alcohol solvent, and at ration of 3:10 for electrolyte-used oil. In 24 hours settling time, the water content was reduced from 12.5% to 1.34%. this research also concludes that water content determination in the used oil can be done using HATR technique with good linearity. text
