Sore throat due 10 inflammation ofthe pharynx was the main complain (hat have a slow respond to aniibiolics even when caused by bacteria. This study aimed to determine the condition of acule pharyngitis so that antibiotic is useful, examined the effectiveness of short course antibiotics (<10 days) and effectiveness of corticosteroid treatment for pain relief and inflammation associated with acute pharyngitis. This was an observalional study in acute pharyngitis patients in the community health center 'Puter' and 'Garuda'. Patients were grouped based on the condition and Ireatment. Effectiveness of therapy was assessed by the treatment duration, and the history, recurrence, complication, and side effects. There was significant difference in treatment duration in patients with virus etiology receiving antibiotic vs. those without antibiotic (IFO. 000). There was no significant difference in treatment duration between the group of patients treated wüh antibiotic and without antibiotic in the case of acute pharyngitis caused by bacteria (p=0.566). Non significance was also found in the other 86 patients of acule pharyngitis (p=0.288). There was no significant difference in Ireatmenl duration between the group of patients treated with corticosteroid and without corticosteroid regardless ofpatients had inflammation (p=0.052) or nol (p=O.659). There was no significant difference in reccurrence or complication in evejy treatment group. The results of the current study showed that antibiotic is not effective in acuie pharyngitis caused by virus. Furthermore, antibiotic has low effectiveness in acute pharyngitis caused by bacteria. Furthermore antibiotic is noi recommended if etiology of acule pharyngilis can not be determined. In addition, corticosteroid treatment has low effectiveness in acute pharyngitis. text
