One ofonline examination rules that were developed in this era was an obligationfor students to turn on their microphones during examination while there are many students in one video conference room, was applied in several study majors in Bandung Institute of Technology. In this study, a cognitive evaluation for this examination rule was conducted. The evaluation was conducted through a survey and an experiment. The survey, that was done through an online questionnaire and involved 297 respondents, was conducted to understand respondents' online examination rules preferences and their perceptions ofonline examination experience, with the rule to turn on (on-mic) or turn off(of-f mic) their microphone. Based on the survey results, an experiment that involved 20 participants using an electroencephalogram (EEG) and an RSME questionnaire to evaluate on-mic online examination rule from cognitive points of view, especially about the performance, mental workload, and attention of the students. In the experiment, respondents took online examinations with both on-mic and off-mic rules. The data processing was done by using paired-samples t-test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test significance test. Survey results shows that 96, 63% respondents prefer on-mic than off-mic online examination rule with most oftheir reasons related to the noise during on-mic online examination that disturbs theirfocus and also their anxiety ofdisturbing other people in the same video conference by creating too much noise and privacy problems. Experiment result shows that in on-mic online examination, students' performance was decreased and their mental workload and attention needs was increased. Based on survey and experiment results, it is recommended to prioritize using of-f mic than on-mic online examination rule, or if it is not applicable, it is recommended to conduct the on-mic online examination by using video conference platform that has "deafen"feature. text |

Covid-19 pandemic rapidly pushed the shift oflearning and examination system from
oflf ine to online. One ofonline examination rules that were developed in this era was
an obligationfor students to turn on their microphones during examination while there
are many students in one video conference room, was applied in several study majors
in Bandung Institute of Technology. In this study, a cognitive evaluation for this
examination rule was conducted.
The evaluation was conducted through a survey and an experiment. The survey, that
was done through an online questionnaire and involved 297 respondents, was
conducted to understand respondents' online examination rules preferences and their
perceptions ofonline examination experience, with the rule to turn on (on-mic) or turn
off(of-f mic) their microphone.
Based on the survey results, an experiment that involved 20 participants using an
electroencephalogram (EEG) and an RSME questionnaire to evaluate on-mic online
examination rule from cognitive points of view, especially about the performance,
mental workload, and attention of the students. In the experiment, respondents took
online examinations with both on-mic and off-mic rules. The data processing was done
by using paired-samples t-test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test significance test.
Survey results shows that 96, 63% respondents prefer on-mic than off-mic online
examination rule with most oftheir reasons related to the noise during on-mic online
examination that disturbs theirfocus and also their anxiety ofdisturbing other people
in the same video conference by creating too much noise and privacy problems.
Experiment result shows that in on-mic online examination, students' performance
was decreased and their mental workload and attention needs was increased.
Based on survey and experiment results, it is recommended to prioritize using of-f mic
than on-mic online examination rule, or if it is not applicable, it is recommended to
conduct the on-mic online examination by using video conference platform that has
"deafen"feature.
