Summary: | Sumatra is one of the most active tectonic set in the world. Sumatra accommodated the subduction of Indo-Australian plate through Eurasian plate for about 5-6 cm/year of velocity [Prawirodirdjo, 2000]. The result of the subduction has produced the 12 and 13 September 2007's Bengkulu Earthquake. With Global Positioning System (GPS) technology, the pattern of interseismic deformation before the earthquke can be learn. From the GPS data measurement, the velocity rate of interseismic deformation pattern can be able to determined. So the potential of the earthquake energy in the future can be estimated. Based to the interseismic deformation pattern analysis from the SuGAr (The Sumatran GPS Array) continuous GPS data before the 2007's Bengkulu eartquake, the velocity rate of the GPS station along the Mentawai forearc is about 2 cm/year, and about 1 cm/year on the Sumatra mainland. |
