Summary:The Belawan Port, situated at the estuary of the Belawan River in North Sumatra, has two main problems encompassing escalating container traffic and sedimentation. Addressing these issues involves strategic measures such as modifying the dimensions of vessels, executing dock construction, and engaging in dredging activities. However, dredging may introduce a new predicament, specifically an acceleration in sedimentation, contingent upon the size of the vessel. Consequently, determining the optimal ship size becomes imperative to minimize the overall investment costs. The total investment cost calculation can be done step by step (Manual Calculation) by considering all ship size solutions (500 TEUs to 8,000 TEUs). The required quay length for each ship size is calculated based on the demand from 2023 to 2042 using the Thoresen Equation (2003). Meanwhile, the dredging depth requirement can be calculated based on the water depth requirement and sedimentation rate. In addition, the total investment cost calculation can also be done with Mathematical Equations that generate a pattern of total investment cost solutions with a tendency to be similar to Manual Calculation. The determination of optimal ship size, dredging depth, and dock length is based on the minimum total investment cost. Manual Calculation and Mathematical Equations yield the same optimal ship size solution: a 2,000 TEUs container ship, with a required quay length is 1.900 meters, and the water depth is 10,5 meters. Thus, the development dock length is 300 meters, and the dredging depth is 0,2 meters every 2 to 3 years. The total development cost of the Belawan Port until 2042 based on Manual Calculation is Rp628,20 billion, while based on Mathematical Equations, it is Rp476,16 billion.
