Direct hydrogenolysis of furfuryl alcohol results in 1,2-pentanediol (1,2-PeD) which is commonly used as cosmetic preservatives, disinfectants, and feedstock in surfactants. Hydrogenolysis of furfural to 1,2-PeD and hydrogenation of furfural to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFA) catalyzed by platinum group metals, such as Rh/OMS-2, has been reported commonly in the presence of pressurized hydrogen (5-45 bar). Platinum group metals are relatively low in natural abundance and the use of high-pressure hydrogen bears difficulties in handling and the chemical infastructure. Herein, vanadyl@MOF-808 was used as catalyst for hydrogenolysis of furfural in alcohols. Heterogeneous vanadyl and its constraint geometry in the MOF may enhance the activity in hydrogenolysis. 2- Propanol and ethanol were used as the hydrogen source because of their ease in handling, non-toxic, and environmentally benign. Here, vanadyl@MOF-808 (3.5 mol% V) converted >99% furfural into >99% 1,2-PeD (>99% selectivity) at 160 ?C for 11 h in 2-propanol, with turnover frequency (TOF) of 2.62 h?1. text
