Summary: | Gender inequality persists as a critical and complex issue within Indonesia's garment sector, where the underrepresentation of women in leadership roles, despite their majority presence in the workforce. This research endeavors to undertake a thorough and holistic examination of this societal challenge, employing an in-depth qualitative analysis grounded in the four frames of gender in the organization framework. Motivated by a recognized need to unravel the complicated factors contributing to gender disparities, and to propose strategies that foster equity within the sector. The research is structured to progress through various stages, commencing with a deep dive into the examination of deeply embedded sociocultural norms and systemic practices that consistently favor males. Masculine stereotypes of leadership emerge as significant exclusionary factors, placing limitations on opportunities available to women and hindering their professional advancement. The research shows that these ingrained factors hinder women's progress and contribute significantly to their persistent underrepresentation in leadership roles. Concurrently, the study acknowledges the unique capabilities that women leaders bring to enhance organizational performance, recognizing the untapped potential that remains underutilized.
To gain a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by women in the garment sector, the research incorporates a qualitative approach, conducting interviews with employees to interpret personal experiences with gender bias and delve into the specific challenges encountered by garment sector employees. The research methodology extends to the application of PESTLE and SWOT analysis, facilitating a nuanced evaluation of both external environmental factors and internal organizational characteristics that contribute to gender disparities. The underlying hypothesis of this research stated that actively addressing gender biases and breaking down artificial barriers will be instrumental in achieving a state of equitable gender representation within the garment sector. As the research progresses, assumptions and hypotheses will be carefully tested, with the intention not only to validate these assumptions but also to identify and recommend initiatives that promote inclusivity. The proposed initiatives encompass the establishment of mentorship programs and a planned emphasis on fair evaluations, recognizing that achieving equitable gender representation serves as a catalyst for enabling women to fully leverage their potential. This, in turn, is envisioned to enhance the sustainability and competitiveness of the garment sector.
Beyond a theoretical exploration, the study aims to provide practical insights that can guide organizations within the garment sector toward greater gender equality. By comprehensively addressing the research problems and objectives, this research seeks to make a substantial contribution to the discourse on gender disparities in Indonesia's garment sector. The ultimate goal is to offer actionable recommendations for positive change, shaping a more inclusive and equitable industry landscape. Through its varied approach, this research aspires not only to shed light on the complexities of gender inequality but also to serve as a catalyst for transformative actions, creating a sector where the potential of all individuals, irrespective of gender, is fully recognized and harnessed.
