Summary: | Walkability is an indicator of the feasibility of an environment for pedestrian activity
(Nyagah, 2015; Setianto & Joewono). Walking is a transportation mode that is still less favored
in Indonesia (Wibowo et al., 2015). Several studies suggest that this is due to the lack of quality
infrastructure and environment that supports pedestrian activity (Wibowo and Gitawardhani,
2011; Tanan, 2011). However, in some cases, particularly in pedestrian areas that are already
supported in terms of physical infrastructure, such as certain sidewalk sections on Ir. H.
Djuanda Street in the city of Bandung, pedestrian activities remain limited. This research
evaluates the level of walkability on Ir. H. Djuanda Street and identifies the experiences, needs,
and perceptions of pedestrians. The research methodology is qualitative, where the evaluation
of pedestrian areas is conducted using the Street Level Walkability Checklist (ITDP, 2018), and
data collection is carried out through literature review, semi-structured interviews,
questionnaire distribution, and direct observations on-site. The results of the evaluation,
observations, and interviews then indicate that the low interest in walking is related to a sense
of insecurity that arises when walking in the evening and at night, closely related to the inactive
facades at several points alongside the street. The output of this research aims to apply the
principles of passive surveillance to the development of street furniture design to enhance
walkability in terms of pedestrian safety in the city of Bandung.
