Summary:Falls represent a significant public health issue, particularly among the elderly, leading to hundreds of thousands of deaths annually and ranking as the second major cause of unintentional injuries globally. Given the heightened risk, especially for older individuals, preventing falls becomes an essential requirement. This study aims to investigate the potential of heart rate variability (HRV) as an indicator of fall risk in individuals with hypertension. The Garmin Venu SQ 2 smartwatch serves as a monitoring tool for HRV, aiding in the assessment of fall risk for hypertensive individuals. HRV measurement methods focus on fundamental time domain metrics, such as RMSSD (Root Mean Square of Successive Differences). As HRV values vary among individuals, it is crucial to establish a specific threshold for each observed subject. This threshold value is determined over a seven-day period and is subsequently used to assess the risk of falling for each subject. In cases where the measured HRV value falls below the individual's designated delta HRV threshold, the smartwatch issues a warning, prompting the user to take a break. The research findings indicate that hypertensive individuals consistently exhibit a lower HRV threshold delta level of 17.94 ms, indicating an increased risk of falls and triggering warning messages on the smartwatch. Conversely, subjects without hypertension demonstrated higher HRV values, specifically 48.86 ms for subject 1 and 46.54 ms for subject 2. Therefore, the Garmin Venu SQ 2 smartwatch proves to be a comfortable and effective tool for identifying the risk of falls.
