INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/79868 Introduction: Coconut water has been promoted as a fluid replacement drink. The effectiveness of coconut water in replacing body fluids after exercise is of interest as an alternative to sports drinks. Apart from being a liquid to maintain hydration, the sugar content in coconut water is easily absorbed by the body as energy. For some people, the taste of coconut water is less acceptable. Adding sweeteners such as honey can make it taste better. Honey also contains glucose and fructose which can be easily absorbed by the body. Methods: 10 male student athletes running on a treadmill at increasing speed until exhaustion received intake of coconut water of the tall variety, coconut water mixed with honey, and bottled water on 3 occasions separated by at least 7 days in a single blind crossover study. Blood glucose, lactic acid, and urine specific gravity (USG) were assessed upon arrival, before exercise, and after exercise. Subjects were instructed not to eat 4 hours before the test, drink 500 ml mineral water 2 hours before the test and record food and beverage intake within 24 hours. Results: Coconut water significantly increased glucose levels after exercise (140.80±22.80 mg/dl). While at fifteen minutes after consumption, coconut water mixed with honey has the ability to be absorbed by the body better (117.9 ± 11.88). While in the control group there was a decrease in every glucose measurement. Lactic acid levels increased in all three groups. Value of USG in coconut water was stable and coconut water mixed with honey decreased. While the control group increased. Conclusion: Coconut water can increase glucose values by 50% so that it can be used as an energy source when exercising. There was no significant difference between the three groups in preventing lactate levels from increasing. In addition to being an energy source, coconut water can maintain hydration balance in a person when exercising.. text
