Summary: | PT XYZ is a steel fabrication manufacturing company that adopts a job shop
production system and implements a process layout on its factory floor to be more
adaptive to the high variation in customer order characteristics. However, the
current system has struggled to adapt to large-scale varied demands. Based on
observations conducted on the factory floor, 47.8% of components ordered by
customers are reported as delayed due to the inability to meet the set target times.
The delays are attributed to a layout arrangement that does not consider the
variation in characteristics and the quantity of orders from customers. An
alternative solution proposed is to design the facility layout based on the similarity
of components using the Group Technology (GT) concept. The research aims to
design an effective GT model to address changes in market conditions at PT XYZ
in creating a facility layout with maximum processing part productive time and
reducing additional setup durations needed.
The Virtual Cell Manufacturing (VCM) model is chosen as the GT model to be used
as an approach for designing production cells. The developed VCM model, tailored
to its actual conditions, will be solved using linear programming analytic methods
with the goal of maximizing productive time, reducing shared machine usage, and
minimizing excess resource utilization.
The designed VCM can adapt to changes in demand by accommodating subjective
factor interventions as long as their impact does not exceed half of the planning
period's duration. With the VCM approach, PT XYZ can implement a three-cell
production system layout on the factory floor using 10 machines and 6 runner
personnel. This design results in a 28% increase in productive time and a 24%
decrease in setup activity percentage for a demand of 183 hours per week.
