| Summary: | Gender category maintenance is a social demonstration that maintains the
western definition of "femininity" and "masculinity" along with their rigid binary
gender expectations. Using an installation consisting of popular toys on the
market, this final work entitled "The Invented" represents its rejection of the
gender category maintenance by emphasizing that the binary gender is a
performance and that the binary gender creates an imbalance of power in society.
This work also argues that the control over gender expressions, which often leads
to discriminatory habits, especially due to power imbalances in society, is the
result of society's dichotomous conventions embedded in popular items in
everyday life, conventions which are in fact plural and tentative. “The Invented”
therefore aims to represent the irony of how protective society is of their
masculinity and femininity which are in fact manmade |
