Summary: | The very high public consumption of clothing products due to the fast fashion
phenomenon has had a number of negative impacts on the environment such as
accumulation of clothing waste, environmental damage due to the production
process of excess raw materials, and injustice in the implementation of work for
workers. One of the fashion products that is consistently used is denim, which has
the characteristics of strong fabric, easy care, and an external appearance that is
suitable for use by all age groups and social classes. However, on the other hand,
the denim fabric production process produces a very high amount of
environmental damage compared to other fabrics. Utilizing post-consumer
fashion denim waste as an alternative upper material for shoes provides variation
and innovation that is more environmentally friendly. Apart from that, denim
fabric has comfort and aesthetic value which makes it easier for designers to
explore the shoe upper design process. On the other hand, shoes, as part of a
fashion product that everyone has, have a very high demand for raw materials,
especially in Indonesia, the 4th largest shoe producer in the world.
The qualitative approach taken in this research uses experimental research
methods and work production which produces the final product in the form of a
shoe prototype that utilizes post-consumer fashion denim waste. Therefore, the
application of the upcycling principle is carried out as an effort to handle fashion
waste by increasing its value in the final product in the form of shoes. The
upcycling principle studied is one solution that can be applied to overcome the
accumulation of waste not only through the recycling process but also through
improvements in terms of aesthetics, function, and economy. Fashion waste
recycling experiments were carried out to make alternative shoe-upper materials
without the need to go through the process of making textile raw materials and
produce recycled products at affordable prices. |
