Social innovation is considered as a solution to overcome rural problems because it refers to actions, participatory processes and results that bring changes in social relations, have an impact on collective empowerment, political regulation and improvements to social systems. Currently, research on social innovation has developed and is no longer only seen as a phenomenon of economic progress, but still needs to be improved in the context of developing countries because of the various characteristics resulting from differences in knowledge between the community and external stakeholders involved in rural development. This research uses multiple case studies to understand the mechanisms of social innovation with a bottom-up and top-down development initiation model so that in both cases it can be compared how the contribution to transformative change in social innovation occurs in the rural context. The method used is qualitative with analysis stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, conclusions and validity. This research produces new insights into the conceptual framework of rural transformative social innovation by distinguishing between bottom-up and topdown initiation models. Transformative social innovation is identified from the phases of income diversification, community capacity building, and transformation of local governance and planning practices. Based on the research results, it was found that the phase of increasing community capacity is the key to the success of transformative social innovation, where in this phase, there is a common perception that drives dramatic social change. The research results in both case studies show that the governance transformation phase does not always involve formal institutions in maintaining transformation through supporting access to resources needed to continue innovation text |

This research is motivated by the various responses given by rural communities in
facing rural challenges. Social innovation is considered as a solution to overcome
rural problems because it refers to actions, participatory processes and results that
bring changes in social relations, have an impact on collective empowerment,
political regulation and improvements to social systems. Currently, research on
social innovation has developed and is no longer only seen as a phenomenon of
economic progress, but still needs to be improved in the context of developing
countries because of the various characteristics resulting from differences in
knowledge between the community and external stakeholders involved in rural
development. This research uses multiple case studies to understand the
mechanisms of social innovation with a bottom-up and top-down development
initiation model so that in both cases it can be compared how the contribution to
transformative change in social innovation occurs in the rural context. The method
used is qualitative with analysis stages, namely data reduction, data presentation,
conclusions and validity.
