FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF SUN PROTECTION FACTORS IN VITRO AND IN VIVO FROM IVY EXTRACT NANOEMULSION SUNSCREEN (HEDERA HELIX L.)

Background: Ivy extract (Hedera helix L.) has the ability to absorb ultraviolet radiation in the wavelength range 200 - 400 nm. The ivy extract contained in the nanoemulsion was developed into a sunscreen product in order to increase the activity of sun protection factors. Method: The nanoemul...

The ivy extract contained in the nanoemulsion was developed into a sunscreen product in order to increase the activity of sun protection factors. Method: The nanoemulsion contains ivy extract stabilized with mixture surfactants of cremophor RH-40 and propylene glycol. Making nanoemulsions begins with mixing the two surfactants using low energy for 60 minutes, then continues with homogenization using a sonicator probe. Ivy extract nanoemulsion sunscreen was evaluated including organoleptic observations, pH, physical stability tests, activity tests including determining irritation properties in vivo, determining the Minimum Erythemal Dose (DEM) value, and determining the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) value in vitro and in vivo. Result: Ivy extract nanoemulsion sunscreen is physically stable for 28 days with a pH of around 6. Nanoemulsion containing ivy extract with a concentration of 0.1- 0.6 (%w/v) produces globule sizes of 115.3 to 282.2 nm. The sun protection factor activity of ivy extract nanoemulsion in vitro produced SPF values of 8.13; 9,10; 11.50; 14.49; 15.95; and 17.02. The best ivy extract nanoemulsion sunscreen in vitro produced an SPF value of 23.20, while in vivo testing gave the best SPF level value of 28.44 (30).Conclusion: Ivy extract nanoemulsion can increase the activity of sun protection factors. The ivy extract nanoemulsion sunscreen has an SPF value that is comparable to products on the market. text
