Summary: | One of the challenges in treating COVID-19 sufferers with comorbidities is the potential for drug
interactions where the majority of sufferers with comorbidities receive polypharmacy. Drug
interactions can cause side effects that can increase the risk of hospitalization, prolong recovery
time, and/or death in extreme cases. This study aims to examine the potential for drug interactions
in COVID-19 sufferers with comorbidities. The research was carried out using a cross-sectional
observational descriptive method and retrospective data collection from control sheets and medical
records of COVID-19 sufferers for the period March 2020 - December 2022 at a private hospital in
Bogor City. Drug interactions potential and severity categories were assessed using Dynamedex and
Lexicomp. Correlation between demographic data and potential drug interactions was analyzed for
significance using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. The results showed that from 96
COVID-19 sufferers with comorbidities, there were 998 potential drug interactions with severity
categories of minor (5,9%), moderat (39%), and major (54,8%), and contraindications (2 cases or
0,2%). There is a significantly correlation between drug interactions and the length of stay in COVID19 sufferers with comorbid diabetes mellitus with moderat (p = 0.007) and major (p = 0.010) severity
categories. Based on demographics data there is significantly correlation (p=0.044) between gender
and drug interaction potential with major category in COVID-19 patient with comorbid diabetes
mellitus and hypertension. From 96 COVID-19 patient with comorbidities (diabetes mellitus,
hypertension, congestive heart failure, urinary tract infection, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney
disease) the significant interaction potential occur mainly in patient with diabetes mellitus and
diabetes mellitus and hypertension comorbid.
