Despite its high production and consumption, palm oil contains carcinogenic compounds. These toxic contaminants are 3-monochloropropane diol (3-MCPD) and glycidyl ester (GE). In this research, the use of activated carbon and zeolite as adsorbents for the removal of 3-MCPD and GE was carried out. Carbon and zeolite were activated first using NaOH before being used as an adsorbent. Based on several characteristic analyses, activated carbon has a better surface area and pore volume than zeolite, but a smaller diameter pore. The use of NaOH as an activating agent can increase the surface area, pore diameter, and capacity of activated carbon as an adsorbent, but leads to structural deformation, desilication, and dealumination of the zeolite, causing the pore volume to decrease even though the pore diameter increases. Adsorption abilities of activated carbon and zeolite towards 3-MCPD and GE were examined in a batch system at 40 °C. 3-MCPD and GE concentration in RBDPO was successfully reduced by up to 94% and 99% using the activated carbon. On the other hand, the zeolite was able to reduce GE in RBDPO up to 99% of its initial concentration. text |
