Mistakes and frauds committed during the record-keeping of room usage can inflict financial loss for the innkeepers and downgrade the quality of the inn for the long run. Room usage monitoring systems that are currently available in the market are considered incapable of giving data integrity and/or too expensive for the smaller inns. This study has the objective to provide alternative solutions for these said problems, and that is to suggest the usage of internet-based electric locks for each of the guest rooms. This system will focus on the record-keeping of the room usage rather than the room security. The lock for a room will only unlocks when the room usage data (guest reservation data) is completely inputted inside the database. This condition guarantees the completeness, accuracy, and consistency of the reporting of room usage data into the system. With some of the cost factors being eliminated (such as the cost of key replacements whenever it’s misplaced, the key strength that is too large for a hotel room, the need to establish private server for the database, et cetera), it is assumed that this simpler system will be much more affordable for the small businesses. This system is also more trustworthy and able to monitor room usage with higher real time accuracy and consistency due to its online database integration with the room keys. From the research of this Undergraduate Assignment, a prototype of an IoT-based room usage monitoring system has been developed using electric lock, RFID reader/writer module, microprocessor, and free computational services from Google Cloud such as Google Sheets and Google Forms. text |
