PREPARATION OF BETAINE SURFACTANT FROM LAURIC ACID

Lauramidopropyl betaine (LAPB) is a surfactant produced from palm kernel oil lauric acid. LAPB is gentler and safer from irritating effects on the skin than other types of surfactants. One of the factors that determine the quality of LAPB to be equivalent to commercial products is the comparison of...

LAPB is gentler and safer from irritating effects on the skin than other types of surfactants. One of the factors that determine the quality of LAPB to be equivalent to commercial products is the comparison of the right composition of raw materials. The ratio of raw materials used in this research is the ratio of moles of lauric acid and dimethylaminopropyl amine (DMAPA) of 1: 1.05; 1:1.08; 1:1,11; and 1:1,14 through an amidation reaction for 8 hours at a temperature of 155?165 oC . The product resulting from the amidation reaction in the form of amidoamine was then transferred to a vacuum distillation unit for 1.5 hours for DMAPA separation. After the distillation process was completed, the amidoamine obtained was reacted with variations of sodium monochloroacetate (SMCA) up to 50% mole excess through a carboxymethylation reaction. The reaction was carried out for 8 hours at a temperature range of 90?100 oC . The best final product obtained was lauramidopropyl betaine (LAPB) with an active matter content of 31.34 % through a two-phase titration analysis test and an acid number of 5.82. text
