Description
Summary:Earth as a home for its inhabitants, especially humans, will experience many environmental problems in the long term, such as global warming, climate change, and the ecological crisis. Ecologists believe that the natural environment and society are interrelated and humans must conserve nature because natural sustainability is determined by human behavior towards nature. The application of the concept of sustainable development is very necessary to deal with environmental issues that have a negative impact in the long term. Sustainable development is defined as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The term “Sustainable” is a term used by environmentalists to denote a mode of practice. From a global perspective to a local perspective, sustainable living practices essentially minimize negative impacts on the environment and produce healthy living spaces. Humans as active determining agents must be integrated with nature to create a sustainable global environment. There are 3 main aspects that must be integrated to achieve a sustainable development effort, namely environmental/ecological resilience, economic sustainability and social sustainability. These three aspects are integrated through 4 basic principles of sustainable development elements, namely social equality and justice, diversity, an integrative approach, and a long-term perspective. The final solution that is able to cover everything is combined and long-term action, one of which may be the best solution is environmental education. The definition of environmental education refers to education in the environment, about the environment, and for the environment. In the same way, sustainable education can be categorized as education about, for, and as sustainability. Environmental education allows humans to learn formally in a school environment or non-formally from the direct environment as a basis for lifelong learning. There are five basic areas of environmentally oriented design, including a healthy and safe interior environment from toxic gases and substances, optimal energy efficiency, ecological and renewable building materials, building forms that respond to the surrounding context, and good structural, material and aesthetic design. . Sustainable building materials are locally created and produced materials that reduce transportation costs and CO2 emissions, consist of second-hand materials, and has a low negative impact on the environment. As an effort to respond to sustainable development, the contribution that can be made by the realm of architecture is by presenting a sustainable architectural environmental design in the form of a natural/green boarding school educational environment that instills sustainable values in the younger generation. The long-term goal of this project is to overcome global environmental problems which are increasingly destroying Planet Earth due to the lack of human attention and awareness of the importance of preserving nature and the sustainability of the Earth. It is hoped that an awareness will be instilled in the younger generation of the importance of protecting and preserving the environment into adulthood and throughout life and that they can pass on these values through the ways they educate their children and grandchildren to their next generation. This project is under the auspices of the Darul Hikam Bandung foundation. The facilities that will be provided at this natural school include indoor and outdoor classrooms, office space, student dormitories, library, workshop space, laboratory, canteen, permaculture farm, school garden and multi-purpose sports hall. This natural school project is targeted at students at the Senior High School (SMA) level of education. The students live in school dormitories which are attached to the school building and are in a natural environment. The site is located at Jalan Maribaya 81-89, Kayuambon, Kec. Lembang, Kab. West Bandung, and has an area of 12.500 m2 or 1,25 ha. The location selection was based on the Lembang District area with a fairly cool climate and weather and being in a natural environment and a land area designated as an education/school area. This location has strong potential as an educational environment that is one with nature. Through analysis of the user, site, context and project issues, a formulation of the design problem was obtained, namely integration of the physical environment and human resources, application of sustainable materials, response to the socio-culture of the local community, and response to topography and context. The design problem is based on theories of sustainable development and green schools which are then analyzed to formulate design criteria and followed by the formulation of alternative design concept ideas.
