Summary: | PT X is a construction company with clients spread among Central Java, West Java, Papua, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. This company experienced financial problem since Covid-19 until 2023 in the form of an inability to cover expenses. The absence of financial records makes it difficult to determine the cause of financial problems. The owners and managers of PT This research was conducted to find the root cause of the financial problems felt at PT X and to find the best solution to solve them.
According to literature from various previous studies, construction companies have a tendency to experience financial problems compared to other industries. Besides that, other studies say that to solve a problem effectively, analysis is needed to identify the root of the problem. The informants involved in resolving this problem were the owner and 3 managers of PT lack of orders and the presence of competition.
By carrying out 4 methods consisting of fault tree analysis (FTA), reverse brainstorming, value-focused thinking (VFT), and fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (fuzzy AHP), the best solution was decided. FTA is used to identify the root cause of a problem, namely poor financial investment decisions. Before moving on to the solution, VFT is carried out, a thinking framework for identifying the value and purpose of the solution. After that, reverse brainstorming is carried out to find all possible solutions. The existing solutions are considered using the fuzzy AHP method to select the best solution.
It was found that the root of the problem was poor investment decisions, and it was found that control and simplicity were the values and goals that PT X owners considered in choosing a solution. Three alternative solutions, namely asking for help from financial consultants, recruiting financial analysts, and training current financial managers, were analyzed using fuzzy AHP with context suitability, sustainability, time required, and costs as criteria. It was found that training current financial managers was the best alternative to choose. Using the ADKAR change management model, this solution is planned to be implemented in 4 weeks in January, consisting of financial reporting training and investment feasibility study training.
Ultimately, the root cause of the financial problems felt at PT X is poor investment decisions, while the best solution to solve them is to train current financial managers. To improve the capabilities of financial managers, adjustments are needed to learn agility and to ever-changing business situations. To handle financial problems at PT X, systematic and in-depth exploration of various other aspects is still needed. It is important to continually consider the root causes of poor investment decisions and seek solutions that suit current financial conditions. Building an open culture, especially from leadership, can be beneficial for the future development of PT
