Description
Summary:Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) is a method for obtaining petroleum by injecting other source of energy into the reservoir .Fatty alcohol ethoxylate is a non-ionic surfactant that is a good emulsifying agent so it has potential to be used in EOR. Fatty alcohol ethoxylates have hydroxy groups that can be modified to sulfonate groups to increase the polarity of the surfactant. Sulfonation process is carried out using the MAOS (Microwave Assisted Organic Synthesis) method because it has better yield results, more efficient heating, and shorter reaction times compared to conventional ones. Sulfonated ethoxylate fatty alcohol has been synthesized at 50 °C with 100 W irradiation power for 60 minutes with ceteareth-12 and ceteareth-20 as precursors with yields of 62.5% and 58.3%, respectively. Based on the TLC characterization, the Rf values of the precursor are different than product. In the IR spectrum, an absorption peak appears at a wave number of 1000?1100 cm-1, which means there is vibration of the S=O bond. The structure of the sulfonated fatty alcohol ethoxylate was confirmed by the presence of proton signal 1H-NMR spectrum at chemical shift of 8 ppm and 3.69 ppm for ceteareth-12 sulfonate and ceteareth-20 sulfonate, respectively. In 13C-NMR spectrum, carbon signal at chemical shift of 72.2 ppm and 70.07 ppm for ceteareth-12 sulfonate and ceteareth-20 sulfonate, respectively. Surfactant solution was stable as one phase in aqueous stability test. In phase behavior test, the surfactant solution formed a microemulsion with the oil sample, so that the resulting surfactant synthesis has potential to be used in EOR applications.
