Catholic Church buildings in the archipelago are cultural artifacts that grow, develop, and adapt through a process of inculturation with local culture which has an impact on changes in the form of Catholic Church buildings. Bali has a local cultural patronage that contains philosophical values that refer to Traditional Balinese Architecture. The Catholic Church has basic building provisions that refer to its liturgy with the aim of achieving the sacredness of the worship space. Both have rules regarding sacred spatial planning that are binding. According to Pope Benedict XVI, the decline in the sacredness of space in Catholic Church buildings after the Second Vatican Council was caused by many Catholic Churches no longer complying with their liturgy. This statement shows that there is a difference between the standard church concept and the development of local church establishments. Based on this, research needs to be carried out to find out to what extent churches built by inculturation still enable the congregation to achieve an experience of sacredness. The Santo Yoseph Catholic Church Denpasar is part of the parish of The Santo Yoseph Catholic Church Denpasar which is the forerunner of Catholic evangelization in Denpasar and the center for the development of various activities of the Denpasar diocese.
This research aims to reveal the concept of spatial aesthetics which is formed from the process of inculturation of Catholic religious rules with Balinese culture in the interior of The Santo Yoseph Catholic Church Denpasar and its influence on the interior aesthetics of prayer spaces in enhancing the experience of the sacredness of the congregation. This qualitative research is inductive using content analysis and hermeneutic methods. The data collection methods used are documentation, observation, and interviews. This research provides a new perspective in the field of design science studies with an interdisciplinary approach that integrates several relevant scientific disciplines under a design science discipline in solving a particular problem together to find out how the meaning of sacredness is formed from liturgical rules based on The documents of the Second Vatican Council related to the layout of worship spaces were implemented in a region rich in culture (Bali).
