Summary: | Waste4Change is a waste management startup company that focuses on reducing the amount
of waste that ends up in the landfill (final processing site). Waste management activities are
carried out in RPM (material recovery house) which consists of various types of waste
processing. Currently, there are problems regarding the accumulation of waste materials
that have not been processed so this research aims to design alternative solutions so that the
amount of waste materials that can be processed into final products increases. In this
research, the computer simulation method for discrete events with FlexSim Simulation
Software is used to find the best alternative solution that can improve production
performance at RPM.
Based on the simulation results, one bottleneck workstation was found, namely the sorting
table in the commercial area.. There are four factors used in this study, there are the number
of additional sorting table units, sorting table process time, number of centric machine units
and gibrik machines. The experimental design is used to combine levels and factors as a
proposed scenario, then the proposed results from the experimental design are compared
with the proposed results from the Optimization feature provided by FlexSim. The results of
the comparison were then further analysed by looking at the amount of output, work-in-
process (WIP), and utilization.
With this further analysis, the best proposed scenario as an alternative solution was found,
which consisted of adding seven additional sorting table units, increasing the sorting table
process time, and not adding centric machine and gibrik machine. The implementation of
this alternative solution can reduce the accumulation of waste material that previously
occurred while increasing the production performance of RPM by 27,62% from the existing
condition.
