However, there is still some several disadvantages and negative effects of using titanium, such as low osteoconductivity and wear resistance. Osteoconductivity can be improved by increasing the surface area so that the total surface energy increases. The low wear resistance can be improved by formation of an alpha case layer on the surface. But the effect of this layer on surface energy doesn’t know yet. Surface energy important to know because it will affect many things, such as protein adsorption, cell migration and proliferation. Finally, this research was conducted to see the effect of alpha case and surface roughness on surface energy. The measurement of surface energy of the specimen was done by wettability testing using simulated body fluid (SBF). The thickness of alpha case and surface roughness(Ra) on the specimen will be varied. The wettability test using ASTM D7490-13 as reference with a 3 times measurement on each sample. Based on contact angle measurement that has been done, the contact angle increases as the roughness increases, in other words reducing the wettability. Vice versa, with increasing of alpha case the wettability of specimen will be decrease. But, on the alpha case obtained from quenching process, it shows the effect of increasing wettability of the specimen. text |
