However, a weir structure will cause a significant difference in water surface elevation between upstream and downstream, resulting in fluid jumps that can cause local scouring downstream of the weir. With the current technological advancements, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software such as Flow3D is utilized to model weirs and observe the effects of local scouring from weir structures in simulation models, providing reference for future designs. Simulations are conducted with several scenarios where variations include the shapes of the weir notches (Rectangular, Cipoletti, and V-Notch) and the width of the notch openings. The differences in the shape and dimensions of the weir notches affect how fluid exits them, consequently influencing scouring downstream of the weir. From the simulation and analysis results conducted, it was found that weirs with V-Notch shapes exhibit greater scouring effects compared to Cipoletti and Rectangular notch shapes. This is due to the V-Notch shape having a smaller opening area compared to Cipoletti and Rectangular notches even with the same notch width, resulting in a more focused flow exiting the notch. This is also reflected in the variation of the notch width, where simulation results indicate that the smaller the notch width for the same notch shape, the greater the scouring effect observed downstream of the weir. text |
