ANALYSIS OF THE EXISTENCE OF MACROZOOBENTOS AS BIOINDICATORS OF RIVER WATER QUALITY (CASE STUDY: DOWNSTREAM OF THE CITARUM RIVER)

The development and human activity that occur in the area will affect the quality of the water and the lives of organisms such as macrofauna and benticus organisms. The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between water quality conditions and sediment parameters in macrozoobentos popu...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/81061 The development and human activity that occur in the area will affect the quality of the water and the lives of organisms such as macrofauna and benticus organisms. The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between water quality conditions and sediment parameters in macrozoobentos populations along the Citarum River, Karawang District, West Java. The presence of macrofauna-like organisms can be a bioindicator of the ecological state of water pollution in the river environment by observing their species, diversity, and abundance. Surveys were conducted from June to September 2023 at five sampling points with three samplings. The study uses the Pollution Index, Biological Monitoring Working Party Mean Scores Per Taxon (BMWP-ASPT), Pearson Correlation, and Principal Component Analysis. (PCA). The results of the observations of the physical-chemical conditions of the measurement exceeded the quality standards on the parameters of COD, BOD, phosphate, and TSS. Whereas in sediments, the highest concentrations were carbon-organic, compared with nitrates and phosphates, while the distribution of particles was dominated by clay. Based on the structure of the Macrozoobentos community, the diversity index is in the middle category, the wealth index is in the lower category, and the redness index is in the highest category with the stable community, as well as the dominance index in a lower category. The calculation of the pollution index (IP) is in the light pollution category, while based on the biotic index BMWP-ASPT, it is in a sufficient category and pollutes from moderate to very bad and heavily polluted, with the highest correlation biotic index BMWP-AASPT British version. PCA demonstrated a very strong relationship of bioindicators: Chironomous sp with phosphate (0,87); Tubifex sp with high brightness (0,86; high COD (-0,84), BOD (- 0.77), pH (-0.93) with concentrations of carbon sediment (-0.92) and phosphates (- 0.,95); Palaemonetes sp with brilliance (0.89) and clay sediment (0.91) of sand (0,93); Melanoides sp with temperature (-0.76), TSS (-0.94), density (-0.89); and Tarebia sp with COD (0.78) and rotting sediment (1.00). text
