Solasodine as a natural steroid of Solanaceae was assumed to have an estrogenic activity. To proof this assumption, an investigation was performed by applying solasodine orally to young female quail. The experimental animals were divided into 3 groups : control, untreated; standard, treated with ethinyl-estradiol 0,05 mg per day per animal; experimental, treated with solasodine 0, 05; 0,5; 1,0; 2,0; 5,0; 10,0; 15,0 and 20,0 mg per day per animal. The observations were performed on the weight increase of the oviduct, which were then examined whether it is accompanied by histological alterations. Histological observation was especially done for the magnum area. They were prepared by the paraffin method, fixed in Zenker-formol solution and stained with Mallory-Azan method. The shell gland area of the oviduct was also observed for their alkaline phosphatase activity by using the Gomori method. The results revealed that quails which were treated with ethynilestradiol caused a marked increase in the wet weight of the oviduct accompanied by a fully histological development of the magnum, although alkaline phosphatase activity in the shell gland was not present. When compared with the control animals, anima, significant difference in wet weight as well as histolo - gical and histochemical observation. It could be concluded that solasodine used in this experiment has no direct estrogenic effect on the oviduct of young quails.ls treated with solasodine did not reveal an . text
