Description
Summary:The arrival of the Dutch East Indies to Gorontalo marked the history of the formation of Gorontalo City as a colonial city. In 1894, Gorontalo City officially became the capital of the Afdeeling, thus becoming the center of government, education, trade, and settlement at that time. The Afdeeling territory's residential area consists of indigenous and ethnic-based settlements/villages. Among these ethnic villages is a settlement inhabited by Dutch people called 'Kampung Belanda' (Dutch Village). The buildings in Kampung Belanda have several types of dwellings, ranging from private houses, and official houses (government), to hotels. The layout of each building is not far apart, indicating that the building layout pattern in Kampung Belanda is grouped. The architecture of the buildings in Kampung Belanda does not show a complete Dutch-East Indies architecture; instead, the residential buildings also appear to use concepts presumed to be 'vernacular' Gorontalo architecture. This indicates that the buildings in Kampung Belanda represent a 'mixture' of Dutch Indies architecture and local architectural styles. This phenomenon produces a unique visual image of the area in Kampung Belanda. This research used a qualitative method with a visual analysis method. The method was employed to understand the social, cultural, and historical contexts that shaped the transformation process or visual creation in Indies buildings in Kampung Belanda. Various sources of information were used in data collection to provide detailed and in-depth descriptive descriptions. The research has reviewed previous studies related to the study of visual elements of buildings in the area as the research focus. The review was conducted to see the variety of applications of analysis methods and research strategies used in previous studies. In this research, the literature presented relates to the development and characteristics of Gorontalo vernacular architecture, the development and characteristics of Dutch Indies architecture in Indonesia, the history of Kampung Belanda, to studies related to the transformation and visual elements of buildings. This research is expected to provide information related to the development of Indies building transformations when the Dutch East Indies tried to adapt to the local environment and its influence on the development of local architecture. This research is also expected to provide guidance for architects and other stakeholders in the conservation planning of cultural heritage buildings in the old city of Gorontalo, especially in the area of Kampung Belanda.
