THE IDENTIFICATION OF URBAN RESIDENTS’ PERCEPTION AND RESPONSE TOWARDS TEMPERATURE INCREASE AND URBAN HEAT ISLAND PHENOMENON (STUDY CASE: BOGOR CITY)

The increase of temperature in urban area is attributed to climate change and urban heat island (UHI) phenomenon, and is affecting urban residents’ health and productivity. Urban residents will be at high risk of weather and climate extreme events, hence mitigation and adaptation efforts towards...

Urban residents will be at high risk of weather and climate extreme events, hence mitigation and adaptation efforts towards the increasing temperature are required. The increasing temperature in urban areas are often neglected, whereas its impact might become more severe without appropriate measure. This research aimed to identify urban residents’ perception and response in Bogor Barat and Tanah Sareal Sub-District, Bogor City, towards temperature increase UHI phenomenon. Questionnaire was distributed to collect respondents’ characteristics, perception, and responses, which comprises of mitigation and adaptation strategies. Descriptive statistics, estimation of population proportion, association analysis, variance analysis, factor analysis, and enumeration are used to analyse the obtained data. The majority of urban residents in study area are estimated to have felt the temperature increase, despite never heard of the term UHI, and low threat of heat perception on respondents is noticed. The increasing heat caused impacts on various range of value, and the perception association and variance on gender, age class, and education level are observed. The association and variance on the knowledge of UHI with mitigation strategies practices is noticed, and the responses were grouped into 10 factors. The use of AC is a common response towards the occurence with varied behaviour. This research concluded that the temperature increase has been felt and brought various impacts, despite the lack of knowledge, and varied responses are observed with numerous mitigation as well as adaptation strategies have been implemented. The urban residents’ and government’s active role are demanded in efforts to reduce urban heat. text
