Urban growth alters activities and resource management in rural areas, while rural areas on the city’s outskirts play a crucial role in supplying agricultural products, settlements, and environmental preservation. The rural transformation due to urbanization is marked by a decline in dependency on the agricultural sector, altering rural functions by changing material flows, resource allocation, ecosystem functions, and cultural ecosystem services, with fiscal and social impacts. Sustainable livelihoods are crucial amidst rural transformation, as they contribute to rebuilding and maintaining environmental sustainability, focusing on preserving or enhancing capabilities and assets without depleting natural resources. Villages have authority in achieving sustainable livelihoods, one of which can be implemented through the concept of smart villages, where information technology innovations are used to enhance quality of life, economic efficiency, and environmental awareness. One form of village authority in managing its potential is by establishing and developing Village-Owned Enterprises (BUM Desa). The rural transformation in the peri-urban areas of Metropolitan Bandung affects livelihoods and resource management in villages, while BUM Desa plays a significant role in managing resource potentials to support village life by adapting to these changes. Mekarmukti Village, as a Self-Reliant Village in the peri-urban areas of Metropolitan Bandung, has the potential to develop BUM Desa with a smart village concept. However, challenges such as funding shortages and technological accessibility need to be addressed for successful implementation. Therefore, research on the prospects of developing BUM Desa with a smart village concept is essential to achieve sustainable livelihoods amidst rural transformation in the periphery of Metropolitan Bandung. This study aims to identify the prospects of developing BUM Desa with the smart village concept to address the challenges of rural transformation in Mekarmukti Village. This research is exploratory, collecting data through interviews and literature reviews. It combines descriptive methods to depict the capacity andvii strategies of BUM Desa, and prescriptive methods to formulate development strategies. Deductive approach and rapid rural appraisal (RRA) are applied to analyze data and involve stakeholders in Mekarmukti Village to develop a smart village concept and achieve sustainable livelihoods amidst rural transformation. The analysis results show that BUM Desa in Mekarmukti Village has the potential to be developed with a smart village concept to face rural transformation. However, it still faces obstacles in achieving smart economy and smart governance indicators, such as service limitations, technology, budget, and community involvement. The current business strategies of BUM Desa Muktijaya has not been able to drive economic self-reliance in Mekarmukti Village. Therefore, development strategies for BUM Desa Muktijaya are formulated, including adding business units, enhancing collaboration, and utilizing technology, expected to enhance economic self-reliance of the village and support the development prospects BUM Desa with a smart village concept amidst challenges of rural transformation. text
