Summary:Meloxicam is a type of NSAID (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) that works by inhibiting cyclooxigenize enzyme, that’s responsible for prostaglandin synthesis from arachidonate acid. Prostaglandin works as a signalling molecule for inflammation. Meloxicam synthesis has been done before with green solvent, but they gave a small yield that hinders them from being produced in a big scale. On this research, 3,3’-(ethan-1,2 yl)bis(1-vinyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium) (C2Vim2Br2) ionic liquid will be synthesized because of their polar nature. It will make them easier to be separated from the mixture. Other than that, the presence of vinyl group could be modified by polymerization to increase it’s nonpolar properties. MAOS(Microwave Assisted Organic Synthesis) will be used in this research to increase the rate of reaction. Separation is done with ethyl acetate as a solvent that will dissolve only the organic compounds but not the ionic liquid. The filtrate then will be subjeceted to further purification using preparative thin layer chromatography. Characterization of the products and ionic liquid is done using FTIR, 1H-NMR and 13C NMR to determine existing functional group that’s present. TGA is also done to check the melting point of the ionic liquid, which is around 80 oC. Another characterization that has been done is HRESI-TOF-MS to determine the molar mass of the synthesized product. It is well noted that a characteristic signal of dibromide compound is seen with the signal ratio of 1:2:1. The calculated mass of the ionic liquid’s [M-H]- is 374,9648 and the found mass is 374,9479. On the synthesis of meloxicam, a new spot has been formed with a Rf value of 0,67 in ethyl acetate:methanol (9:1) eluent, along with a characteristic proton signal in the 1H-NMR spectrum (2,89 ppm(s, 3H) and 2,46 ppm(s, 3H)). Futher purification will be needed because the 1H-NMR spectrum still shows some impurities.
