Description
Summary:In general, open public spaces are areas that support the human need to gather and interact, providing appropriate places for various activities. Public spaces play a crucial role in regional development by offering accessibility, communication routes, and places for play and relaxation. The quality of public spaces is determined by comfort, positive image, accessibility, connectivity, and the level of social interaction. The Benteng Kuto Besak (BKB) area in Palembang is an example of a public space rich in historical value that functions as a center for social and tourism activities. The presence of open public spaces in urban areas like Palembang, including the BKB area, is vital for social interaction and as tourist destinations. BKB, which dates back to the 18th century, has been turned into a public and tourist space but faces challenges in maintenance and attractiveness. The government's efforts aim to make BKB a tourist destination with a special focus on cultural heritage preservation and facility improvement. The purpose of this study is to measure the success of open public spaces and evaluate the improvement and development activities in the area through enhancing the quality of building and environmental planning that can empower economic, social, and cultural activities. Additionally, this research aims to ensure that area planning activities provide a distinctive character based on the potential that exists, so that the area can showcase cultural characteristics and foster a sense of love and pride for the city. To achieve this, specific targets must be met, including identifying aspects and indicators that influence the success of a good public open space in a cultural heritage area, identifying field facts that show the potentials and problems occurring in the public open space in the Benteng Kuto Besak area, measuring the quality of public open spaces based on the Public Space Index and Importance Performance Analysis methods, identifying the roles and interests of stakeholders who influence and are affected by the planning of public open spaces that support cultural heritage areas, and including considerations and components that need to be planned in the public open spaces in cultural heritage areas based on issues and various policies. This will be followed by measurement and analysis. The research stages start with formulating the problem issues outlined in the background, formulating the research objectives, conducting a theoretical review based on related literature, developing a methodology, and then conducting surveysv and analysis. The type of research used is qualitative and quantitative (mixed method) with a descriptive exploratory approach aimed at describing the research object or research results. The study results identified factors that influence the success of public open spaces based on literature review, such as inclusiveness, meaningful activities, comfort, safety, pleasurability, meaning, culture, and creativity. These factors subsequently become variables in measuring the success of public open spaces. Furthermore, the actual conditions, including problems and potentials, were assessed through observation using these variables. This was followed by Importance Performance Analysis (IPA) to evaluate and understand users' perceptions of a service or facility, resulting in four quadrants containing each attribute that needs prioritization in planning or is already satisfactory. Next, the most influential stakeholders in the planning of public open spaces in the BKB area were identified through stakeholder mapping. Recommendations for public open spaces in the BKB area were then formulated based on actual field conditions and user perceptions, supported by stakeholders with authority based on their degree of influence and interest.
