In Indonesia, many landfill sites are overloaded which causes the waste in the temporary disposal sites to not be transported and makes the waste piles up. These piles of waste will become a disaster and have a major negative impact on the environment and people’s lives if not handled as soon as possible. A comprehensive solution is needed to deal with this waste problem. One way is to solve waste as early as possible at its source. Every individual in society as a waste producer has a responsibility in waste management. There needs to be a change in the community’s view of waste management from ‘collect-transport-dispose’ to ‘sort-transport-process-sell’ so that with this change in view, waste management no longer depends on landfills and can minimize the transportation of waste to landfills. Therefore, as an effort to respond to the waste problem in Indonesia, architecture’s contribution is to present a waste management and processing facility that can facilitate the community to process waste, especially organic waste, the most waste generated by the community. Through organic waste management and processing facility on a sub-district scale, the community is invited to be part of the waste management solution with a group of communities as initiators. In addition, this facility also has educational and recreational functions that support in providing awareness to the community of the importance of managing waste from its source. This facility is expected to ignite the community and become a catalyst in creating a sustainable environment through the management and processing of organic waste. text |
