INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/81478 Spices are a valuable asset of Indonesia, highly sought after by other nations due to their numerous and diverse benefits. Historically, spices were considered a luxurious commodity due to their rarity that are attracting European nations to Indonesia, which eventually led to colonization. However, the golden era of spices lasted only about two centuries before their popularity waned. To date, Indonesia has been unable to restore this golden era. There are two main reasons for the decline: suboptimal spice production and decreasing consumption trends. Therefore, an interactive public educational space is needed to enhance public awareness and understanding of the preservation and development of Indonesian spices. This project is initiated by the Ministry of Education and Culture in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy. It has three main functions: education, collaboration, and commerce. The location criteria for the development include being in DKI Jakarta, easily accessible, and close to other tourist destinations. The chosen site is a vacant 7,000 m² plot in Menteng, Central Jakarta. The building users are classified into three categories; managers, business owners, and visitors, which include communities and the public. Each user category has different characteristics and activities that influenced the future design. A precedent study of similar projects in four sample buildings was also conducted. This led to the formulation of three design issues: architecture as an educational tool, social interaction, and the building's image as a tourist destination. The final chapter discusses theories that will serve as the basis for design criteria. These criteria will be developed into spatial programs and design concepts text |
