However, this does not mean that Indonesia is free from literacy crisis. According to UNESCO, literacy involves the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, and communicate. In terms of reading comprehension, Indonesia ranks among the bottom five countries globally. Additionally, the reading interest index in Indonesia is still categorized as moderate; partly due to the lack of libraries that can be easily accessed. While libraries are no longer the primary source of information in this digital era, they still play a crucial role in connecting people with the information they need and bridging the gap for those without digital access. Libraries have evolved beyond mere archives for information, library now serve as an important community hubs for interaction and shared spaces. Currently, only about 20% of the demand for library is being met in indonesia, with the greatest shortage found in public libraries at the sub-district (kecamatan) level. Therefore, there is a need to build library and public space that meets these needs and help improve literacy. The proposed project will combine three main typologies: park, library, and community center. Integrating a library with a park as the main element of public space aims to provide recreational and educational facilities as a "Third Space" for the community. The park will create a restorative environment that can enhance concentration and cognitive abilities, thereby improving reading comprehension. The community center will serve as a complementary space for interaction and collaboration among literacy communities and the general public, facilitating activities that promote literacy across all groups. text |
