ANALYSIS OF SOUNDSCAPE CHANGES IN RESIDENTIAL ENVIRONMENTS DUE TO THE TRANSITION FROM INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE VEHICLES TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES AND ITS IMPACT ON PUBLIC'S PERCEPTION

The quality of the acoustic environments in residential area is one of the aspect that can influence resident’s comfort. Therefore, residential area is expected to have higher quality of acoustic environment, which is not the case. This is caused by traffic noise, which is dominated by internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEV). Other than reducing air pollution caused by ICEV’s emission, the development of electric vehicles (EV) also reduce noise pollution. To evaluate the changes of soundscapes in Indonesia’s residential area and its impact on public’s perception due to the transition from ICEV to EV, research is done by laboratory experiment using soundscape simulator. The simulator is composed of the interface made using Pure Data, Reaper, LoopMIDI, dan eight speakers. Participants are asked to compose three soundscapes in their respective residential areas, namely the actual soundscape, and two ideal soundscapes, with different type of vehicles, which are ICEV and EV, and to fill in a questionnaire after each composition. Results have shown that the actual soundscape is dominated by human activities and vehicles sound, with higher overall sound level. Ideal ICEV soundscape shows decrease both in usage of horn and exhaust sounds and overall sound level. Ideal EV soundscape shows result similar to ideal ICEV soundscape, but shows higher level of vehicle sounds due to EV’s safety factor. Decrease in human activites and vehicle sound level produce pleasant perception, but high EV sound level doesn’t produce annoying perception. Nature sounds are most liked in every soundscape and vehicle sounds are most disliked in actual soundscape and ICEV ideal soundscape. However, in ideal EV soundscape, human activities are most disliked. Keywords: soundscape, residential, electric vehicles, simulator, perception text
