This history began approximately 200 years ago with the implementation of forced cultivation, known as cultuurstelsel, by the Dutch colonial government. Since then, many sugar factories have been built in Indonesia, particularly on the island of Java. At its peak, Indonesia had hundreds of sugar factories operating with large production capacities, making it the world's second-largest sugar exporter after Cuba. However, various challenges began to hinder the growth of the sugar industry in Indonesia. These included the Great Depression, World War II, and the nationalization of Dutch-owned factories by the Indonesian government. Due to these issues, many sugar factories in Indonesia gradually ceased production permanently. What once numbered in the hundreds, now only around 40 factories remain operational. The large buildings that were once bustling centers for hundreds of workers are now largely abandoned. In fact, many factory sites have been repurposed into residential areas without leaving traces of their industrial past. These sugar factories bear witness to Indonesia's history—not just its sugar industry, but also its colonial history, struggle for independence, and post-independence development. Today, many of these factory buildings lie abandoned. Through the concept of adaptive reuse, there is significant potential to repurpose these buildings for current needs. One potential is to establish a facility that educates the public about the history of the sugar industry, Indonesia, and future potentials. The revitalization of Jatibarang Sugar Factory is one such initiative responding to these potentials. It aims to create a facility where people can learn about the extensive history of Indonesia's sugar industry. By utilizing the remaining historical assets in the factory area, Jatibarang Sugar Factory could serve as a platform for educating the public about the history of sugar production and agriculture in Indonesia. Moreover, additional functions could be added to promote economic and social activities within the Jatibarang Area. text |

Indonesia has a long history in the sugar industry.
