Summary:Abstract:

Development of tourism activity at Ciater area is going massively. Utilization of land in the area are dominated by building / housing for new tourism object and accommodation facilities to cater tourist overflow from

Sariater tourism object.

This research is aimed to identify both positive and negative impact due to tourism activity to the land use of Ciater area, and to identify the driving factors

that cause land-use convertion surround the area.

Approach applied for this research is map analysis (superimpose) for 3 period of time : 1984, 1997, and 2003, and descriptive analysis to describe the

condition and characteristic of the area through a systematical description.

The expansion of tourism area surround Ciater from 1974 (year of establishment) had reached villages around the core area. It reached 434,14 hectares of land converted for this purpose. Those converted land are 240,97

hectares (55,50%) from rain-storage rice field, 181,5 hectares (41,83%) from plantation land, and 11,60 hectares (2,67%) from settlement. Based on the study, it is concluded that driving factor of the land use

conversion at Ciater tourism area are good accessibility and poor productive land.

The impact of this land use conversion are the opening of isolated area, developed infrastructure, decrease of agricultural land, and excessive development of Ciater

area. On the other hand, the impact on land use of Ciater area are the growth of Ciater area, tourism sector, conflict for land use, and uncontrolled land use

utilization.
