Summary: | UNESCO designated Indonesian Batik as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible
Heritage of Humanity on October 2, 2009. Batik is considered an expression of
cultural elements which form an identity. Likewise for Cimahi, a small city adjacent
to Bandung, West Java. In June 2009, through a competition organized by the
Mayor of Cimahi, five batik motifs were established with the hope of becoming an
identity of Cimahi which is favored by its people and throughout Indonesia.
However, in reality, not many people are aware of them. Observed from its
resources and culture, Cimahi has symbolic potential, namely the existence of the
Kampung Adat Cireundeu. Since 1918, Kampung Adat Cireundeu has been
preserving ancestral food culture, consuming rasi as a staple food. It has received
many awards from the government. Therefore, through the processing of rasi and
the interesting objects in Kampung Adat Cireundeu became the main topic for this
research. The results of the research exploration are processed into batik
illustrations that are philosophical, aesthetic, and functional on fabric using the
batik technique. The research method was achieved through field studies in
Kampung Adat Cireundeu, interviews with Kampung Adat Cireundeu
spokespersons, and exploration of motif forms resulting from the visual adaptation
of rasi processing and interesting objects in Kampung Adat Cireundeu with a
stylization drawing style. In addition, a literature review is needed regarding food
as a gateway between cultures, cassava plant anatomy, batik, motifs on batik, as
well as basic theories on color, drawing styles, and composition. The results of this
research are expected to be an alternative innovation for the decorative variety of
Cireundeu batik, an icon of Cimahi, and can be enjoyed by a wider range of
consumers.
