Tasikmalaya embroidery is known for its manual craftsmanship and its high quality. The embroiderer moves both of their hands and feet to create the desired variety of embroidery. Tasikmalaya embroidery has experienced a decline in exclusivity due to a large drop in market prices. This made many embroidery craftsmen unable to compete and left their profession. In this research, the researcher found an opportunity to apply local legends in Tasikmalaya embroidery. Tasikmalaya embroidery is a narrative craft absorbed from Chinese culture.
Tasikmalaya embroidery is well-known and exported to countries such as
Malaysia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Brunei Darussalam, the United States, and
Africa. Tasikmalaya embroidery is known for its manual craftsmanship and its high
quality. The embroiderer moves both of their hands and feet to create the desired
variety of embroidery. Tasikmalaya embroidery has experienced a decline in
exclusivity due to a large drop in market prices. This made many embroidery
craftsmen unable to compete and left their profession.
In this research, the researcher found an opportunity to apply local legends in
Tasikmalaya embroidery. This is because it is rare to find the application of
Tasikmalaya characteristics in Tasikmalaya embroidery. This research focuses on
Tasikmalaya embroidery, the legend of the guardian fish of Situ Gede, and its
application to fashion accessories.
The researcher conducted research exploration on the visualisation of the Situ
Gede guardian fish legend, exploration of Tasikmalaya embroidery techniques in
finding suitable techniques for the visualisation of the Situ Gede guardian fish
legend, and exploration on organza, satin, and taffeta fabrics to find suitable
fabrics with Tasikmalaya embroidery.
