This statement sparked a question. “What would happen if a figure as important as
‘mother’ died?” This research was created to produce visualizations based on the
interpretation of song lyrics that address this theme. To answer this question, this
research was carried out by collecting secondary data related to the lyrics of a
song. The song "Fourth of July" composed and sung by Sufjan Stevens was chosen
as the theme of this research because it has lyrics that tell of the moment of
separation between mother and child.
In the process of working on the work, exploration of fabric’s surface manipulation
was carried out, and design sketches were made which would ultimately be selected
for production, with reference to the lyrics of the song "Fourth of July". The
visualization media used is the creation of a fashion collection. Most song
adaptations are visualized in the form of drawings, paintings or animations that
are quite easy to find, but no one has created a specific visualization to adapt
"Fourth of July" by Sufjan Stevens into a concrete form. Fashion collections
themselves are usually created by fashion designers for certain purposes. For
example, a spring-summer themed fashion collection that adapts existing materials,
colors and trends, with the aim of making the collection popular with the public
during that season. In this case, the fashion collection has a theme about the
experience and feelings of children's when they lose their mother as written in the
lyrics of the song "Fourth of July" by Sufjan Stevens. Therefore, this research aims
to adapt the interpretation of the song "Fourth of July" as a form of reference for
the experience of losing a mother into a visual form in the form of a fashion
collection consisting of two menswear and two womenswear, each of which implies
feelings of sorrow and sincerity. the departure of the mother figure.
