The material used was grown from seed. Development of the plant was recorded morphologically in the field, while for anatomy assessment various parts of the plant of different stadia of growth were fixed and processed by the paraffin method. Stevia rebaudiana is an erect perennial herb with many branches reaching a height of over one meter. The root resembles a fibrous root system. Roots are usually pentarch while several are tetrarch. In the stem collateral vascular bundles are arranged in a circle and the inner boundary of the cortex is marked by an endodermis consisting of large cells with many schizogenous canals interspersed. There is no correlation between the length of internode and the size of trachea and tracheid. The trachea has a simple perforation. The leaf is dorsiventral with a palisade layer consisting of 2 - 3 rows of cells. Anomocytic stomates are found on both sides of the leaf. A stoma is formed by unequal division of a protoderm cell. The smaller daughter cell which has a larger nucleus and dense cytoplasm will divide once more in aplane parallel to the preceding plane of division. A yellow brown solid substance is found in cells of the leaf epidermis and in the stem region below the apical meristem in the material processed with the paraffin method. Oil droplets are found at the distal stem tip below the apical meristem and in the young leaf primordia. At the leaves and young stem two types of glandular hairs and two types nonglandular hairs are found text |
