ANALYSIS OF TSUNAMI WAVES DUE TO LANDSLIDES WITH CONSTANT VELOCITY ON A FLAT SEABED
Tsunami is a natural disaster in the form of big water waves caused by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and landslides. In this final project, we discuss tsunami waves caused by landslides on a flat seabed at a constant velocity. First, we examine two models, i.e. the Linear and Fully Dispersive (LF...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/82125 Tsunami is a natural disaster in the form of big water waves caused by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and landslides. In this final project, we discuss tsunami waves caused by landslides on a flat seabed at a constant velocity. First, we examine two models, i.e. the Linear and Fully Dispersive (LFD) model, which describes waves dynamics in deep water and the Linear Shallow Water Equations (LSWE) model, which applies in shallow water. Analytical solutions from the two models are provided and used to simulate the formation of free surface waves due to landslide movement underneath. Simulations were done for various depths, and as expected the result shows that the dispersion effect is more dominant in the deeper area. Simulations were done for various shapes of landslide with the same area, and we examine the waves formed, especially the leading wave component. Our simulation result confirms the far-field leading wave theory: various landslide shapes with the same area will generate surface waves with the same leading wave. For waters with medium depths, wave dynamics are described using the Linear and Weakly Dispersive (LWD) model. Dispersion effects can then be analyzed using the analytical solutions of the three models, i.e. LFD, LWD, and LSWE in terms of surface plots and fluid particle’s velocities as functions of water depths. text |
