ORGANIC REMOVAL KINETIC OF DOMESTIC WASTE WATER IN BANDUNG SEWERAGE SYSTEM AS PLUG FLOW REAKTOR
Although most people regard the sewer merely as the transport system for wastewater to the treatment plant, it is actually a biological, chemical and physical reactor. Traditionally, most research efforts in wastewater treatment were directed towards the design and control of wastewater treatment pl...

Traditionally, most research efforts in wastewater treatment were directed towards the design and control of wastewater treatment plants. The conversion process that occur during the sewer transport were essentially ignored. Recently, integrated wastewater management has gained much interest. However, information about sewer processes is scarce. The purpose of this research was to obtain a more thorough understanding of the changes that occur in the sewer, specifically about the organic removal rate of domestic waste water. An investigation were performed in a main sewer network, located in Bandung. Firstly, the channel physical characteristics was observed. Secondly, the wastewater composition was determined on-site and after sampling also analysis. Samples are taken from five sampling points during 7 days period, with diurnal variations for the last 3 days. Organics are represented by COD concentration and biomass are represented by VSS measurements. It is found that the organic removal rate reached 54,54 % and 82,12 % of biomass growth. By considering the sewer system as a plug flow reactor and using the Monod equation, the collected datas are used to calculate the reaction kinetics of domestic waste water in Bandung's sewer system. This approach obtained Ks value of 469,43 mg/l CODand umaks of 3,08 per-day. These values are then compared to the COD concentrations that is measured. It is concluded that Monod equation for plug flow reactor can be used as a method to approach the organic removal kinetics of wastewater in Bandung's sewer system. <br /> text |
