EXPLORATION OF AGATEWARE TECHNIQUE WITH PAMOR KERIS MOTIF AS INSPIRATION ON TRADITIONAL JAPANESE TABLEWARE CERAMIC PRODUCTS

Keris is a traditional weapon with high symbolic and spiritual value that not only functions as a dagger, but also as a work of art with pamor motifs on the blade. Pamor is a decorative metal motif rich in philosophy produced by the complex and sophisticated Indonesian fold- forging technique. The listing of the keris in UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage necessitates preservation measures that can protect the related culture by all parties. However, these efforts are hampered by the public's general view of the kris as a mystical object, rather than a masterpiece of high aesthetic, philosophical and technological value. Amidst the development of the ceramic industry, and the growing interest in Japanese ceramic tableware, this research integrates the visual elements of keris pamor into Japanese ceramic tableware using the agateware technique. This decoration technique is similar to the making of the pamor and can replicate the visual uniqueness of the pamor motif using colored clay. This research aims to explore the agateware decoration technique by adapting the visual appearance and forging technique of the kris pamor and also its application to ceramic tableware products with the intention of preserving and introducing the philosophy of the kris pamor in a contemporary and functional form. The results of the exploration of agateware techniques by adapting the visuals and techniques of making pamor keris motifs are expected to explore the various design possibilities that can be produced by agateware techniques as well as produce innovative ceramic works with high visual and cultural value that are beneficial to the wider community.
