CARDIOPROTECTIVE ACTIVITY POTENTIAL OF ETHANOL EXTRACT OF CELERY HERB (APIUM GRAVEOLENS L.) IN MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION-INDUCED DYSLIPIDEMIC RATS

Dyslipidemia has been identified as a major risk factor in the development of cardiovascular disease. Natural ingredients such as celery (Apium graveolens L.) are potential alternative treatments for therapy in individuals with a high risk of heart attack and dyslipidemia. This study evaluated the potential cardioprotective activity of celery herb extract along with its dose and mechanism. Celery was extracted using 70% ethanol by maceration method, then tested on male Wistar rats with dyslipidemia and induced myocardial infarction with isoproterenol. The results showed that celery extract at a dose of 50 mg/kg BW could inhibit the increase of cardiac biomarkers and prevent damage to the infarct area significantly (p<0.05) against the positive control and had a cardiac histology profile similar to that of a normal heart although it did not prevent the increase in cholesterol. On the other hand, celery extract at doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg BW showed no effect on these parameters. Thus, celery extract at a dose of 50 mg/kg BW showed cardioprotective activity without improvement in lipid profile. text
